I walked into Water Street Oyster Bar without much of a plan, which is my usual approach here. Corpus Christi doesn't do subtle, and neither should your appetite.

We have spots that hand you a bay tour with Captain Jim before your cocktail, and family-run counters where the jalapeño hush puppies are the real religion. Even the cornbread at Portis Kountry Kitchen is worth skipping seafood for.

I ate too much, learned about trifecta sauce, and stared at the bay like a tourist. Here’s where to do the same.

Pleasant dining atmosphere

I walked into Water Street Oyster Bar without much of a plan, which is my usual approach. The bartender took pity on me and guided me through the menu with the patience of someone who has answered the same question a thousand times. I ordered the trout, and the portion was generous enough that I felt slightly embarrassed for eyeing my neighbor's plate. The fish was fresh, the flavor was clean, and the service stayed attentive without hovering. It's a pleasant room, too. I left full, satisfied, and with the vague feeling that I had done something right for once.

Killer Brussels sprouts
Great option near aquarium

Railroad Seafood sits right near the aquarium, which is convenient if you want to look at fish before eating them. The catfish fillets were huge, the kind that makes you wonder if they're raising them in a lab. The house beers were worth trying, and I say that as someone who usually treats brewery beer as an afterthought. The Brussels sprouts were genuinely killer, crispy and salty in all the right ways. Portions were generous, service was excellent. I ate too much, then walked it off by staring at the bay like a tourist. No complaints.

Generous portions, fair price

Fisherman's Seafood feels like the kind of place where someone's grandmother is in the back, which is a compliment. The fish was fresh, the batter was crispy, and the jalapeño hush puppies were the best I've had in this city, maybe anywhere. The family running it treated me like a regular, even though I'd never been there. They also serve massive pancakes for kids, which I didn't order but admired from a distance. Portions were generous, the price was fair. I left with a full stomach and a strange desire to come back tomorrow.

Dog-friendly waterfront bar

Delicious signature cocktails
Beautiful bay views

Harrison's Landing is technically a restaurant, but the real draw is the bay tour with Captain Jim. I hopped on the boat, listened to him talk about the water, and felt like I'd learned something, which is rare for me. Back at the bar, Robin made me a signature cocktail that was strong and smooth, and she did it without looking annoyed that I couldn't decide. The patio is dog-friendly, so I spent a good hour watching tourists and their pets. The views are beautiful. I didn't eat much, but the drinks were worth the trip.

Solid landlubbers alternatives
Reopened at new location
Good seafood and drinks

Laguna Reef has reopened at a new location, and I'm glad I found it. The fried fish was huge and tasty, the kind that makes you forget about the calories for a few blissful minutes. Service was friendly, and they didn't rush me, which I appreciated. If you're with someone who doesn't want seafood, they have solid landlubbers options, though I can't vouch for those because I was too busy eating fish. The drinks were good, too. It's a no-fuss place that gets the basics right. I'd go back.

Highlights
Friendly bilingual waitstaff service
Delicious food worth returning
Prime venue for family gatherings
Fresh catch varies with weather

Jane's L-Head is the kind of place where the waitstaff greets you in Spanish or English, depending on your mood, and both feel natural. The food was delicious enough that I started planning my return before I finished my meal. The fresh catch changes with the weather, which is honest, and I respect that. It's also a prime venue for family gatherings, based on the number of long tables and loud conversations happening around me. I sat alone, ate too much, and watched families argue lovingly. It was nice. I'll bring people next time.

Cornbread worth the visit
Generous portions, cheap prices
Perfectly crisp fried chicken
Soul food done right
Sweet yams and greens

Portis Kountry Kitchen is not a seafood place, but I'm including it because the cornbread is worth the visit all by itself. I got the fried chicken, which was perfectly crisp, and the sides were soul food done right. Sweet yams and greens, both of which made me feel like I was doing something good for my body, even if I wasn't. Portions are generous, prices are cheap, and the place was busy. I paid, left, and immediately thought about the cornbread again. That's a review in itself.

Highlights
Overpriced with wrong orders
Dry snapper, small portions
Beer served past prime
Staff ignored after complaint
Takeout risked allergy safety

I had high hopes for Hofbrau, but they were dashed pretty quickly. The snapper was dry, the portions were small, and the beer tasted like it had been sitting in a line for too long. I sent back the wrong order, which they fixed, but the staff ignored me after that, which was a nice touch. Then I heard someone mention that their takeout order had allergy concerns, and that was it for me. It's overpriced, and I left feeling like I'd wasted an evening. I won't be back.

Boudin balls are awesome
Generous portions, fair prices

Turtle cheesecake is incredible
Spicy Cajun noodles worth it

LeStourgeon in Portland is worth the drive. The boudin balls were awesome, spicy and rich, and the Cajun noodles had a kick that made me respect them. Portions are generous, prices are fair, and the service stayed consistently strong, even when the place got busy. Then I tried the turtle cheesecake, which was incredible. It was so good that I almost ordered a second slice, but then I remembered I'm an adult. I didn't. I regret that decision. If you go, order the cheesecake, and don't be like me.

Seafood boils with perfect flavor
Trifecta sauce highly recommended
Great for first-timers, guided experience
Cook-your-own grill, s’mores fun

MR.Crabby is where you go if you've never done a seafood boil and want someone to hold your hand through it. The staff is friendly and went above and beyond, explaining the trifecta sauce like it was a sacred ritual, which it kind of is. The boil itself was perfect, the flavor was on point, and they even let you cook your own grill and make s'mores at the end, which is ridiculous and fun. Great for first-timers. I left with sticky fingers and a new favorite sauce. No complaints.

Attentive, friendly waitstaff
Real family recipes
Worth the price
Busy but worth it
Great food options

Land and Sea was busy when I showed up, which is usually a good sign. The waitstaff was attentive and friendly, and the food was worth the wait. I can't tell you exactly what I ordered because the menu is full of real family recipes, and I just pointed at things. Everything was good. It's the kind of place where you pay a little more, but you don't feel ripped off because the portions are honest and the flavors are homey. Busy but worth it. I'll be back, and I'll bring people.

Highlights
Oysters redefine fresh expectations
Half-off sushi happy hour
Attentive, helpful server recommendations
Old fashioned with Woodford Reserve
Desserts worth taking to-go

Water Street Sushi Room is upstairs, and I almost missed it because I was looking for a sign. The oysters redefined what I thought fresh meant. They were cold, briny, and perfect. The sushi happy hour is half off, which is dangerous, and I took advantage. The server helped me navigate the menu, and she recommended the old fashioned with Woodford Reserve, which was strong and smooth. Dessert was good enough that I asked for a to-go box. I ate it in my car. No shame. This is the place.
