You’ve eaten a taco on every corner of this town, from the spit at Tacos La Reina to a barstool at BUS, and you still can’t decide which one wins. That’s Corpus Christi for you: a place where the best pastor in the city sits a few blocks from a brewery serving Brussels sprouts worth a broken glass.

We hit the pavement, ordered the carne guisada, the churros, and the green sauce that lingers, and we’ve got the receipts. The list ahead is your excuse to eat your way through the whole coastal sprawl.

Start hungry.

Best corn in Corpus Christi
Warm, friendly service always
Hot churros with cinnamon sugar

I ordered the steak taco and watched it get built in front of me. The meat portion was almost rude. It spilled over the tortilla like it had somewhere to be. The corn here is the best I've had in Corpus. Sweet, smoky, and charred just enough to make me ignore my manners. The staff greeted me like a regular on my first visit, which felt suspicious but nice. I capped the meal with a churro. Hot, crisp, and dusted in cinnamon sugar. I ate it too fast and regretted nothing. This place turned a quick lunch into a small event. I'm already planning my next excuse.

Fun, modern Mexican dining

YOLA runs on a different kind of energy. The bar was loud in the best way, and the service matched it with a brisk, cheerful pace. But the poblano soup is the real hook. I went back twice in one week for it. Creamy, smoky, and finished with something bright I couldn't name. Each bowl arrived with a heat that built slowly, like a polite but persistent friend. The tacos were solid, but the soup is the reason I'll return. It's modern Mexican cooking that feels familiar without being lazy. I left with a full stomach and a slight suspicion I'd been spoiled.

Railroad Seafood put me through a strange emotional wringer. The Brussels sprouts were so good I didn't mind stepping on broken glass near the bar. The catfish filet was enormous, a true slab that hung off the plate. I had to surrender halfway through. The house ranch deserves a plaque. It's tangy, thick, and I would put it on a waffle. My beer flight arrived with a server who explained each pour patiently. The homemade Lime Light was smooth and tart, the kind of drink that makes you forget you're at a brewery. This isn't a taco spot, but it's worth every stop.

Taco Rico claims the best carne guisada in town, and I'm not prepared to argue. The meat is tender, the gravy has a proper kick, and the tortillas hold up to the mess. The made-to-order taco bar lets you pile on onions, cilantro, and lime without judgment. I tried the spicy sausage too. Good decision. It came out hot and crumbly, with a heat that made my eyes water a little. The staff moved fast, and the prices are fair. I was in and out in fifteen minutes. That's efficiency. My only complaint is that I didn't order two rounds of the sausage.

The handmade tortillas here are the headline. They're soft, slightly charred, and taste like someone's abuela is in the back. I stopped for a quick taco and ended up staying for a full meal. The service was warm, and the food arrived at a clip that respected my hunger. A passerby at the counter told me I had to come back. They were right. The chile relleno was decent, but the tacos are the draw. Warm, fresh, and simple. I left with that pleasant drowsiness that follows a good meal. I'll make the return trip, and I'll bring a friend.

Hi-Ho is the kind of place where the tortillas steal the show. Homemade, fluffy, and so light they barely hold their shape. I had the breakfast tacos and they arrived hot, fast, and generous. The walls carry Selena photos and some stories about presidents stopping by. That's history you can eat around. The service was brisk, but not rude. Prices are friendly, and portions are serious. I was out the door with full hands and a full belly. Open early, which means I can start my day here. I will. The tortillas alone justify the trip across town.

Friendly staff, quick service

Tacos La Reina does one thing exceptionally well: pastor. The meat is marinated with a deep, smoky sweetness that clings to the spit. I ordered two tacos and immediately regretted not ordering four. The carne asada is also worth your time, charred and seasoned with restraint. This place moves fast. That's fine. I wanted a quick, satisfying stop and got exactly that. The staff didn't fuss over me, which I appreciated. They knew I was there for the pastor. The salsa bar had a good range, though nothing beat the pastor's own juices. I'll be back. It's that simple.

Worth the return trip

BUS is a bar, but I'm including it because it changed my taco-adjacent drinking life. The historic bus station vibe gives it a sense of place that most spots lack. My beer flight arrived with a guide who knew their stuff, and the homemade Lime Light was the smoothest I've had in Corpus. The Brussels sprouts were good enough to survive a broken glass incident, so that's a high bar. This isn't a taco joint, but it's where you go after tacos. Or before. No judgment. The happy hour is solid, and the garden is pet-friendly. I'll be back with my dog.

El Camino makes tortillas that ruined me for other places. They're made fresh, and they changed the way I think about breakfast. The vegetarian options don't feel like afterthoughts. I had a mushroom and cheese taco that was better than most meat versions I've tried. The guacamole arrived chunky, bright, and clearly not from a bag. The margaritas matched the relaxed mood, and the staff let me linger without hovering. I stayed an hour longer than planned. That's the kind of place El Camino is. Comfortable, unpretentious, and quietly excellent. I'll be back. Probably this week.

The corn at Jefe's is the best in Corpus Christi, and I'll fight anyone who disagrees. It's charred, buttery, and dusted with just enough chile. The tacos are made to order, which means fresh tortillas and a patient wait. The meat portions were generous enough to spill onto the wrapper. The service was warm and friendly, and I got a churro on the way out. Hot, crisp, covered in cinnamon sugar. I ate it standing at the counter. No regrets. The place is simple, but it doesn't need to be fancy. It just needs to be good. It is.

I walked in expecting tacos and walked out thinking about a churro. The carne guisada is the reason this place stays busy. Rich, peppery, and spooned generously onto fresh tortillas. Service was fast even when the line backed up. Other items surprised me. The burger was respectable, and the enchiladas didn't disappoint. But the carne guisada is the anchor. It's exactly what you want when you need something warm and steady. I waited for a seat, but not long. The flow works. I'll be back, and I'll order the same thing. That's not a failure of imagination. It's a recognition of quality.

This place has a green sauce that should be studied. It's bright, herbal, and carries a slow burn that creeps up after you think you're safe. I tried the menudo on a whim and it was excellent, rich and properly spiced. The michelada arrived cold, salty, and dangerously easy to drink. I saw a birthday party in the corner, complete with a small hat and a song. The staff joined in. That's the kind of place this is. My taco order was simple, but the sauce made it memorable. I left with my mouth still buzzing. I'll be back for the green stuff alone.
